The Gazette, based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is seeking an experienced photojournalist for its award-winning photography team. This position is responsible for visual storytelling at the state’s second largest newspaper and digital properties. The ideal candidate will be comfortable covering a variety of subject areas including news, sports and features using both photography and video.

This role blends daily assignments and projects. It requires strong collaboration and planning with our reporting staff and editors so that we illustrate deep, contextual stories for our audience via photography and video. We believe in giving you time to discover your own stories found in the field, which can turn into photo galleries or other multimedia projects.

Our ideal candidate is highly motivated and able to quickly adjust to a variety of settings and topics. They should be comfortable collaborating with newsroom staff to create high impact content with deep contextual meaning. The ideal candidate will be highly curious, highly accurate and ethical and want to try new things. You’ll be as passionate about daily assignments as you are about the medium and long-range projects. You’ll seek to continuously develop and refine your skills. Our ideal candidate maintains an awareness of news important to the community and will also be a highly professional ambassador of our brands.

Our ideal candidate is comfortable using social media tools to make sure their work is reaches our audiences quickly and in a variety of ways.  This is a fast-paced position in a newsroom that thinks big. Our photojournalists work shifts to meet the flow of the news, including nights, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis as well as some regional travel.

Our ideal candidate can juggle tasks simultaneously, be comfortable working as part of a team and work well under tight deadlines. This candidate will work in a scheduled rotation to include day, evening and weekend shifts.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Ideal candidate will be a flexible, self-motivated, creative go-getter and problem solver who works well on a team and has excellent communication and team building skills.
• Candidate must be highly organized, and exceptionally strong photographer.
• Strong photo and video editing skills are required, and experience with digital CMS and publishing is preferred.
• Candidate must be committed to accuracy.
• Must have a strong understanding of storytelling on multiple platforms.
• Licensure for drone photography preferred.

A Bachelor’s degree in photojournalism, photography or related course of study is expected, or equivalent technical experience.  Prior news photography/video experience, including sports, is required.  Candidate must be company insurable and have acceptable driving record.
