The University of Iowa Central Microscopy Research Facility (CMRF) is an Office of the Vice President for Research core resource, offering a wide array of instrumentation to research investigators. We are currently in search of a candidate for a Core Facility Research Assistant to perform laboratory maintenance, reagent preparation and reagent inventory. The candidate will also prepare biological research samples employing established techniques for fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, and staining of the specimens. Due to the diverse equipment within the facility, the candidate will be encouraged to broaden their skill set.

Work Modality: In-Person, located in Eckstein Medical Research Building (EMRB).

Although we are located in Eckstein Medical Research Facility, in the heart of the University of Iowa health campus, we serve investigators from all areas of the University.

The Facility provides instrumentation and technical assistance to research programs involving the use of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, light microscopy and confocal microscopy and x-ray microanalysis. The CMRF also provides all solutions, supplies, and training necessary for investigators involving microtomy, including specialized staining and embedding techniques, negative staining, metal coating, cryo-fixation, and cryomicrotomy, enzyme cytochemistry, immuno-cytochemistry, morphometry and stereology. The CMRF serves both the experienced and novice investigator and provides training for those in need. Alternatively, all or parts of a project can be handled by the staff.

The Central Microscopy Research Facility is reviewed by an advisory committee consisting of faculty from various University departments.

Qualifications:
Education or Equivalency Required

  • A Bachelor's degree in Biology or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Required Qualifications

  • General biological related laboratory support experience.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy, attention to detail, including accurate record keeping.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills, and ability to interact positively with a variety of individuals from all backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate working proficiency with Microsoft Office software, (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Histology specimen preparation and sectioning techniques.
  • Fixation of biological samples for microscopy.
  • Immunofluorescence sample preparation.
  • Immunogold sample preparation experience.
  • Experience with digital imaging software (FIJI, Bitplane Imaris or similar packages).
  • Computer networking, data transfer and management.
  • Histotechnology knowledge and/or certification.
  • Knowledge of University policies, procedures and regulations.
