Environmental Analyst

The State Hygienic Laboratory in Coralville is looking for an Environmental Analyst, within the Air Quality Unit of the Environmental Health Division. The Environmental Analyst position is primarily a field-based position and requires travel across the state of Iowa, frequently overnight. During sample collection, this position routinely ascends and descends ladders, stairs, and ramps; and consistently raises and lowers objects weighing up to 25 pounds, from one level to another.

The Environmental Analyst performs inspections, sample collection, quan titative and qualitative tests for identification, and monitoring. Ambient air conditions are monitored for regulatory compliance and to protect public health by the prevention of air pollution. The work done is used to inform and educate the general public as well as the environmental health community, regarding ambient air quality.

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, some weekend hours will be required

Work Location: Coralville, Iowa

Work Modality: On-site. This position is performed fully on-site.

Since 1904, the State Hygienic Laboratory has been at the forefront of public health issues in Iowa. As the state’s public health and environmental laboratory, the Hygienic Laboratory serves all of Iowa’s 99 counties through disease detection, environmental monitoring, and newborn and maternal screening.

Qualifications:
Education or Equivalency Required

• A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology, or a science with emphasis on analytical chemistry, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Required Qualifications

• Basic working knowledge of maintaining, servicing, and calibration of Air Quality monitoring equipment.
• Demonstrate good teamwork and interpersonal skills, including relationship management within the unit and outside the immediate work unit.
• Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy, attention to detail, including accurate record keeping.
• Demonstrate working proficiency with Microsoft Office software, (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
• Possession of a valid state or commercial driver's license, and the ability to meet University Fleet Safety Standards.

Desirable Qualifications

• Demonstrates work toward improvement and implementation of Air Quality Operations.
• 6 months or more of experience maintaining, servicing and calibration of Air Quality monitoring equipment.
