Iowa Health Care Department of Health Care Information Systems is seeking an IT Support Consultant to assist in the management and tracking of UI Health Care inventory of computer and network electronics from planning to disposal. Duties include working with customers to determine hardware needs, new equipment research and recommendations, ordering, receipt/distribution, evaluating existing hardware for reallocation or disposal, installing software, inventory management and reporting, and supervision of student staff. This position will also assist with maintaining a supply of computer parts, monitors, and CPUs to be used for reallocation within various departments of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Primarily located at our offsite facility in Coralville.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Research and recommend IT solutions to customers.
  • Work with purchasing to order new hardware.
  • Processes receipt and inventory of new hardware.
  • Maintain warehouse inventory using central inventory management system, including scheduled interval inventory evaluation.
  • Ensures proper disposal of hardware including media erasure or destruction and inventory management.
  • Clean computer hard drives prior to machine reallocation, either for redeployment to another hospital department or disposal by UI Surplus.
  • Remove usable parts (hard drives, CD-ROM drives). Replace computer parts as necessary to enable equipment to be redeployed.
  • Assist with maintaining a parts inventory for use by HCIS desktop consultants or other departments.
  • Maintain service vehicle cleanliness.
  • Maintain warehouse cleanliness.
  • Laser engraver maintenance
  • Develops detailed work plans and project schedules.
  • Performs installation, maintenance, and support of hardware and software.
  • Evaluates new desktop hardware and software for possible inclusion in set of supported products.
  • Works with other unit staff in developing and implementing project plans.
  • Takes self-study and vendor sponsored classes pertaining to technical systems software and hardware, as needed.
  • Trains unit staff in unit technical procedures.
  • Maintains inventory records for surplus and new computer equipment.
  • Assist with the implementation of approved projects, providing project support and services.
  • May manage small projects or one or more phases of larger projects.
  • Provide interim functional supervision to student staff.
  • Participates with management in interviewing and evaluating candidates when vacancies in unit staff occur.

Salary: $49,511 to commensurate – 4A

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, IT-related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Experience Requirements

  • Experience, typically 1-3 years, in technology and/or business process analysis and solution design in a Technical Product Support or Customer Service Center including service recovery.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft 365 Suite.
  • Experience working with computer hardware.
  • Experience with inventory and asset management in a business environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to move computer equipment.
  • Driver’s license required and must meet the University of Iowa Fleet Services Program rules and regulations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to operate a motorized pallet jack and forklift.
  • Certified in or familiarity with the ITIL Framework.
  • Experience using an IT Service Management Tool (ServiceNow, Cherwell, etc.)
  • Familiarity with current and upcoming IT hardware & software.
  • Experience supporting workstations running macOS.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Strong customer service focus.
