The University of Iowa department of Design & Construction is seeking a Senior Design Project Manager Team Lead. This is a working Team Lead position that collaborates with the unit Associate Director in a number of ways, including but not limited to all aspects of capital and non-capital projects, and assessing workload of design project management staff. This position will also maintain and manage their own project management workload at the Senior level as well as providing direct, administrative supervision and support for up to eight design project managers. Responsible for all aspects of performance management with direct staff.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the and .

Duties to Include:

  • Provides direct supervision, leadership and coaching to PMs.
  • Assist unit AD to develop effective procedures for PMs to ensure the successful management of projects during the design phase of project delivery.
  • Manage conflicts between delivering institutional objectives and project team member isolated interests.
  • Projects are high profile, and may have difficult features such as demanding schedule, extremely tight budget, or difficult site, and have a significant impact on operations.
  • Compare planned budgets vs. actual expenditures, identifies, reports, and explains variances.

Location: University Services Building

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional experience (typically 5-7 years) in project management of projects during programming, schematic design, design development and/or construction document phases.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in computer software applications.
  • Familiarity with construction site safety guidelines.
  • Extensive experience developing and managing complex project budgets.
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Previous supervisory and performance management experience.
  • Experience in a client-focused, team-oriented environment.
  • Professional experience (typically 5-7) in project management of projects during programming, schematic design, design development and/or construction document phases on a university campus.
  • Expert/Leader experience with project management software such as BlueBeam, Microsoft Projects, etc.
  • Expert/Leader experience in sustainability design practices, laboratory and/or MEPT capital improvement projects and/or state building inspection procedures.
  • Expert/Leader experience managing healthcare facility capital projects.
  • Experience with commissioning processes.
