GENERAL JOB SUMMARY: 
Kirkwood Community College seeks an experienced and enthusiastic individual to join our Industrial Technologies team as a Welding Instructor. The ideal candidate will possess an extensive knowledge of welding theory, including SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, structural steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and pipe welding. The successful candidate should also be proficient in thermal cutting and fabrication techniques, including oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting, and other relevant methods. Additionally, the candidate should have the ability to teach technical mathematics, blueprint reading, and weld symbols at the college level. This position may be assigned to teach at our main campus or one of Kirkwood’s Regional Centers depending on program needs.
 
Key responsibilities include providing instruction, maintaining curriculum standards, and engaging with students, faculty, and industry partners. Instruction will be delivered through a mix of face-to-face lectures, online modules, and hands-on lab activities, with classes held during mornings, afternoons, and/or evenings. This role also involves advising students, serving on committees, and promoting the Industrial Technology program to the community and industry.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide instruction, including both lecture and laboratory sessions, with a focus on welding, thermal cutting, and fabrication techniques.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop course syllabi, assessments, and learning outcomes.
  • Communicate regularly with department staff, students, and faculty to ensure alignment with program goals.
  • Maintain safety and cleanliness in lab settings, enforcing safety protocols.
  • Participate in curriculum development and improvement initiatives, including welding and fabrication techniques.
  • Promote and represent the welding program to local businesses, industries, and the community.
  • May be assigned to teach at the main campus or at one of Kirkwood's Regional Centers.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves occasional (10-33%) sitting and constant (67-100%) standing in a classroom/laboratory setting.  Constant (67-100%) reaching, walking, lifting, dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and viewing various types of visual work, and perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture.   Frequent (34-66%) stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and visualizing three-dimensions from a two-dimensional medium. Exerting up to 50-100 pounds occasionally. May travel to other on-campus facilities, off-campus facilities and agencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in a related field or a 4-year registered apprenticeship with a journey-level credential.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience in the welding and fabrication industry.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Welding Educator (CWE) credentials through AWS.
  • Experience teaching at the college level or providing industrial training.
