New Hire: $19.48  •  90 days: $20.44  •  1 year: $21.51  •  2 years: $22.68  •  3 years: $23.95

Performs specialized clerical work involving the independent application of advanced bookkeeping principles and practices in the maintenance of financial records. Employees of this class work independently, but within clearly established accounting systems and procedures. The incumbents in this class exercise independence in the application of bookkeeping techniques and may supervise the work of other employees or serve as a lead worker. Knows the County’s Customer-Centered Culture principles, the County’s Mission, Strategic Plan and Core Values and demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction for all customers on a regular basis. Codes and validates documents/transactions for numerous departments, divisions and/or accounts. Inspects invoices/claims for accuracy and completeness. Prepares outgoing warrants, checks and/or invoices. Negotiates re-payment amounts for people involved in collections/bankruptcies according to established policy. Administers collections as directed by court order. May perform tax sale redemption process duties including monitoring time frames and updating manual and computer records. Calculates amounts due to unpaid taxes and tax sales. Adjusts and reconciles a limited number of accounts and records, taking trial balances. Performs detailed research and compiles reports from accounts, records and other sources. Provides information to property owners and/or their agents or attorneys’ explains and interprets policies and procedures, including applicable Code provisions as required. May be responsible for verifying and updating information for publication in the newspaper and on the Linn County website. May supervise the work of other employees; may train new employees and serve as a lead worker. May process or be responsible for confidential information. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the “Voice of the Customer” and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in a related field required; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of bookkeeping.
  • Working knowledge of office principles, practices and equipment.
  • Knowledge of accounting procedures.
  • Knowledge of computer, microcomputers, word processors and related printers.
  • Knowledge of the Code of Iowa pertaining to office procedures.
  • Ability to maintain accounting records and to prepare clerical and routine financial reports and statements as directed.
  • Ability to  make and verify complex and varied arithmetical computations and tabulations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to use a keyboard efficiently, operate a calculator and some experience with spreadsheet software like Excel.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information or data.
  • Ability to lead and direct the work activities of others.
  • Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment. May be subject to criminal history review.
  • Regular work attendance required. 

SHIFT: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday
