Accountant
Shelter House

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Maintain full scope of the agency's accounting functions:
- Maintain the general ledger on an accrual basis of accounting using QuickBooks Online.
- Assure timely and accurate completion of all Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable tasks, and processing of all expenditures and maintain appropriate hard copy and electronic documentation systems.
- Track Accounts Payable to ensure timely collection of revenue.
- Prepare detailed monthly invoices for numerous funding sources and ensure they are coded and accurately entered into the accounting system.
- Maintain month-end and year-end procedures.
- Set and refine controls to assure the accounting for all financial transactions is both accurate and complete.
- Ensure that all accounting functions are completed according to established deadlines.
2. Issue payment to vendors, produce invoices for services rendered by Shelter House, and reconcile all bank accounts:
- Issue payments to vendors in a timely manner and maintain all vendor accounts.
- Issue invoices for services rendered by Shelter House in a timely manner and reconcile payments, assuring that financial controls are in place to capture revenues for all services provided.
- Ensure sales tax for services rendered is charged when relevant and that timely payments are made to the Iowa Department of Revenue.
- Prepare all deposits and reconcile with both donor/funder records and accounting systems.
- Reconcile bank accounts monthly; reconcile bank deposits with internal records and monitor all checks not cancelled within 90 days.
- Complete month-end checklists for reconciliation and required approvals.
3. Generate agency financial reporting documents:
- Prepare detailed monthly reports for multiple funding sources; ensure they are coded and accurately entered into the accounting system.
- Support Program staff in the tracking and management of department budgets.
- Submit Forms 1099 and 1096 used to report non-employment income to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
- Provide Management with relevant financial reports on a timely basis.
4. Provide support to Management and the Executive Director:
- Attend Audit and Finance Committee meetings.
- Present training in accounting and finance procedures to non-accounting staff.
- Assist with compiling reports and paperwork requested by auditors.
- Assist with annual budgets for grants and related expenses.

Requirements
Qualifications, Experience, and Education Requirements:
- Experience with financial reporting, payroll processing, and accounts payable.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
- Experience with grants and contracts desirable.
- Commitment to accuracy and timeliness.
- Experience billing fee-for-service programs desirable.
- 3 years' general ledger accounting experience.
- Experience with QuickBooks (Online) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to take direction and maintain confidentiality.
- Detail-oriented, solution driven, and have a team attitude.
- Commitment to the Shelter House mission and vision with a desire to learn more about our work.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to life 15 pounds at times.
Pay:
The payrate for this position is $48,000 - $52,000 commensurate with experience.
